[SOLVED] Fields hidden to API not showing in authoring UI

Previously, I could hide a field from API but it would still show up in the UI. We use these “hidden” fields as indicators to the content authors. Recently, it seems that a change has been made that if the field is hidden in API that it does not show on the UI.

Is this expected?
