[SOLVED] Auto-Translate in Chinese (Simplified vs. Traditional)

Current behavior

Chinese Traditional (zh-TN) fields get a Chinese Simplified (zh-CN) translation

Expected behavior

zh-TN should be translated into Chinese Traditional and not Chinese Simplified.

Minimal reproduction of the problem

1. Write a few words in English
2. Auto translate it to Chinese Simplified (zh-CN) and to Chinese Traditional (zh-TN)
3. Both translations will be identical
4. Try to do the same things in Google Translate and compares - results in Chinese Traditional (zh-TN) will look different.

Maybe the translation API considers Chinese as Chinese Simplified only?

Hi, I use deepl and google (in this order). It seems that deepl only supports chinese language in general. So I will have to use google for this case.

Not sure it works. I think it still shows in Chinese Simplified (zh-CN) rather than in Traditional (zh-TW).

Have you pressed translate again? And cleared all values before?

OK, I think I know what didn’t work.

I think the languages are flipped - zh-TN is showing simplified translation while zh-CN shows the traditional translation (should be the opposite)

Do you have an English term that i can test?

the word “phone”:

simplified - 电话

traditional - 電話

Also, not sure if you changed anything, but when erasing the languages fields in existing items (not new ones) - it still shows just the simplified version. Now it shows in both fields the simplified version for both existing and new.

btw: zh-TW is not traditional, it is taiwanese. I do not know if this makes a difference.

But I don’t understand what you mean with your last paragraph.

I know, but it’s common that Taiwanese refers to Chinese Traditional, while in Mainland China it’s Simplified.

If I create a new item/post and type the word “phone” the translation will be in Simplified for both languages.

Okay, but neither google translate nor deepl seem to support zh-TW, so it is always converted to “zh”.

I think I have to add zh-TN to the language list.

I can also make a mapping from zh-TW -> zh-TN if that makes sense.

Did you do the mapping? Because now it works as expected:

zh-CN = Simplified

zh-TW = Traditional
