Current behavior

We have upgraded our plan a year ago or so to have 150000 API calls, however, we are getting mail reports, stating that we are almost at our limit, when we are only at around 48000.

Expected behavior

Only notify us when we get to perhaps 70% of usage?

This feels a bit weird because you might have spikes, for example a single event with lots of traffic, but then there after normal traffic for the rest of the month.

True, but things have developed because things go wrong. You are sick at the end of the month + public holiday + weekend and then you have a 5-6 days where you are not checking your business emails. Some people have mentioned that they have received these emails too late, therefore it has been changed.
